Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris (born October 20, 1964) was an American politician, attorney, and the current vice president of United States. Kamala Devi Harris is the first female vice president and is the highest-ranking female official in U.S history. Harris is a member of the Democratic Party and was previously the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017. Additionally, she served as an United States senator representing California between 2017-2021. Harris was born in Oakland. Harris received her law degree from Howard University. Her career began in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Harris was later recruited to join the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. The office was named San Francisco district attorney in 2003. In 2010 Harris was elected Attorney General for California. Harris was elected again in 2014. Harris was the junior United States senator from California from 2017 until 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez to become the second African American woman senator and the first South Asian American ever to be elected to the United States Senate. As senator, she was a vocal advocate for reforms to healthcare, federal de-scheduling of cannabis, a path towards citizenship for immigrants without a legal status and the DREAM Act, a ban on assault weapons, and progressive tax reform. She was praised nationally for her provocative questioning of Trump administration officials during Senate hearings, which included Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who was accused of assault on a woman.
